The Hidden Job Market: How to Find Opportunities That Aren’t Posted Online

When looking for a job, you probably go straight to online job postings, LinkedIn and company career pages. While that’s where you will find jobs to apply for, many job opportunities aren’t advertised publicly. Dig a little deeper and you’ll discover a “hidden job market” where your job search opportunities could dramatically expand.

The “hidden job market” consists of roles that you can find through networking, referrals and internal promotions – giving you more opportunities and an advantage when job hunting. Employers choose not to publicly post job opportunities online for many reasons, including saving costs and improving efficiency. Some positions may also be confidential, or it could be that companies are prioritizing internal promotions for their current employees.

5 Tips to Tap into the Hidden Job Market

Stay ahead of the job market and learn about hidden opportunities with these tips.

Tip #1: Build your network

Leveraging and building your network will be one of the most effective ways to access the unadvertised job market. A lot of positions are filled via word of mouth, so it’s important to stay connected with other professionals by attending industry events and engaging on LinkedIn.

You can also reconnect with past colleagues as well as professional associations to unlock exclusive job boards and other opportunities.

Tip #2: Work with recruiting firms

Recruiters are always in the know about what’s going on in the job market and will also have access to jobs that aren’t publicly advertised thanks to their many professional connections.

Connect with a recruiting firm and build relationships with staffing professionals to get your foot in the door for these hidden opportunities. Recruiters will often match you with the role you want according to your skills and expertise.

Tip #3: Reach out to hiring managers

If you’re interested in a specific role or a company, don’t wait for a job posting. Reach out to the hiring manager directly! You can send a personalized message expressing your interest in the company and share your skills and experience and also how you could contribute to the team.

If you’re a good fit for a current or upcoming opening, you will make an impression and possibly be considered for future opportunities. Don’t be afraid to follow up, but keep it considerate and professional.

Tip #4: Utilize informal interviews

Set up informal interviews where you can have a low-pressure conversation with industry professionals who are willing to give you insight. Engage with them at networking events or even on LinkedIn and ask them for their advice and how they started their career.

Follow up and stay connected even if there are no immediate opportunities. Maintaining and building these relationships will keep you top-of-mind if and when something opens up in the future.

Tip #5: Freelance!

Don’t forget about freelancing! Offer your services to help on a project, or volunteer to offer your skills in a charitable or community service project if you have time. Many companies look to their freelancers when they want to hire for full-time roles before opening their positions to the public.

People you meet when volunteering may also be in positions to hire and will take note of what you bring to the table.

Be Proactive

As you are trying to access the hidden job market, you need to be a little more proactive compared to traditional searching. Reaching out directly, building relationships and maintaining visibility will be key to your success in finding a job. Be confident and take charge of what you want and seek an opportunity head-on.

Good luck!
